Week of January 27
Free Agent Players
Jason Hammel signs
1 year $6,000,000 contract with Cubs, including $1m incentives.
SPRO Analysis - Chicago
Cubs overpay for Hammel. SPRO $3,769,000. Hammel's
kinda
one of those pitchers who you think he's just gotta be better than
this. But he isn't. Serviceable as the 5th starter,
but
really nothing more than that. This spot should really go to
your
next prospect; he's bound to do as well.
Player Resigns with Club
Bruce Chen signs
1 year $4,250,000 contract, with mutual option for $5.5m and $1m
buyout, with Royals. Contract also includes $1.25m
performance
incentives.
SPRO Analysis - Kansas
City pays market value for Chen. SPRO $5,410,000.
Okay with 2nd year at $5,599,000.
Arbitration Contracts
Alex Avila signs
1 year $4,150,000 contract, with club option for $5.4m and $200,000,
with Tigers.
SPRO Analysis - Detroit
gets bargain in Avila. SPRO $5,410,000 for 1 year,
$11,867,000 for 2 years.
Week of January 20
Free Agent Players
Grant Balfour signs
2 year $12,000,000 contract with Rays.
SPRO Analysis - Tampa
Bay gets bargain in Balfour. Grant lost $3m after the
Baltimore
deal fell through and he signed for this, but ... he was worth the
Baltimore money. Why do I get the feeling that Tampa Bay will
get
the better of the closer war with the Orioles. SPRO 2 yrs.
$15,712,000.
Matt Garza signs
4 year $50,000,000 contract, including $1m incentives and vesting
option for 5th year, with Brewers.
SPRO Analysis - Milwaukee
overpays for Garza. This is a bad deal. We're really talking
Kyle
Kendrick here and paying him as if he's special, or at least the
pitcher he was with the Rays. But he's not. Lower
IP, bad
peripherals are masked by win totals and an okay ERA. He
gives up
HR, Hits, and has a bad SO/W Ratio. All worse than league
average. I guess if you're worse than league average you get
a
four year deal worth this. His 3 year rolling PEVA averages
have
decreased for 3 straight years. Don't be surprised if this
doesn't work out for Milwaukee. SPRO 2 yrs. $13,350,000.
Grady Sizemore signs
1 year $750,000 contract, plus $5.25m incentives, with Red Sox.
SPRO Analysis - Boston
pays market value for Sizemore. Well, kinda. We like Sizemore
and
are rooting for him to succeed, but he's really the type of player,
after two seasons off, that may not require that incentive package.
I guess other teams were structuring their contract offers
like
that as well, but ..., oh, well, just but. SPRO $850,000.
Eric O'Flaherty signs
2 year $7,000,000 contract with A's.
SPRO Analysis - Oakland
pays market value for O'Flaherty. We're surprised at the
second
year and likely would not have done that. Of course, in a
way, it
might be insurance against a late start. SPRO $2,934,000 in
2014.
Week of January 13
Free Agent Players
John Buck signs
1 year $1m contract with Mariners.
SPRO Analysis - Seattle
gets bargain in Buck. Viewed now as a backup after two years
of
Mendoza line limbo, Buck is a durable catcher who can provide full time
work if needed, and give you a little pop. SPRO $4,469,000
based
on past use, which Seattle hopes it does not have to do.
Arbitration Contracts
Max Scherzer signs
1 year $15,525,000 contract with Tigers.
SPRO Analysis - Detroit
pays market value for Scherzer. Bit of a bargain, but right
in the mix. SPRO $16,491,000.
Tony Abreu signs
1 year $745,000 contract with Giants.
SPRO Analysis - San
Francisco pays market value for Abreu. SPRO $614,000.
Peter Bourjos signs
1 year $1,200,000 contract with Cardinals.
SPRO Analysis - St.
Louis pays market value for Bourjos. SPRO $1,315,000.
Brett Cecil signs
1 year $1,300,000 contract with Blue Jays.
SPRO Analysis - Toronto
pays market value for Cecil. SPRO $1,619,000.
Matt Joyce signs
1 year $3,700,000 contract with Rays.
SPRO Analysis - Tampa
Bay gets bargain in Joyce. Rays sign a lot of these
contracts.
Guess working in Florida has its perks. SPRO
$6,061,000.
Tommy Hunter signs
1 year $3,000,000 contract with Orioles.
SPRO Analysis - Baltimore
overpays for Hunter. It won't be an overpay if his use
increases
to closer, but is a bit of a reach upfront. SPRO $2,268,000.
John Jay signs
1 year $3,250,000 contract with Cardinals.
SPRO Analysis - St.
Louis get bargain in Jay. Cards are another club that seems
to
get a lot of bang for their buck. SPRO $6,418,000.
Austin Jackson signs
1 year $6,000,000 contract with Tigers.
SPRO Analysis - Detroit
gets bargain in Jackson. SPRO $7,045,000.
Luke Hochever signs
1 year $5,210,000 contract with Royals.
SPRO Analysis - Kansas City
gets bargain in Hochever. SPRO $6,859,000.
Sam Lecure signs
2 year $3,050,000 contract with Reds.
SPRO Analysis - Cincinnati
pays market value for Lecure. SPRO 2 years $3,491,000.
Ian Desmond signs
2 year $17,500,000 contract, plus $500,000 incentives, with Nationals.
SPRO Analysis - Washington
overpays for Desmond. Slight really, but a bit high.
SPRO 2 years $15,450,000.
Jed Lowrie signs
1 year $5,250,000 contract with A's.
SPRO Analysis - Oakland
pays market value for Lowrie. SPRO $5,401,000.
Luke Gregerson signs
1 year $5,065,000 contract with A's.
SPRO Analysis - Oakland
pays market value for Gregerson. SPRO $4,594,000.
Steve Cichek signs
1 year $3,800,000 contract with Marlins.
SPRO Analysis - Miami
pays market value for Cichek. SPRO $3,515,000.
Chris Johnson signs
1 year $4,750,000 contract with Braves.
SPRO Analysis - Atlanta
pays market value for Johnson. SPRO $4,134,000.
Chris Davis signs
1 year $10,350,000 contract with Orioles.
SPRO Analysis - Baltimore
pays market value for Davis. Right on the money after his
breakout year last year. SPRO $10,342,000.
Mike Leake signs
1 year $5,925,000 contract with Reds.
SPRO Analysis - Cincinnati
pays market value for Leake. SPRO $5,360,000.
Brett Gardner signs
1 year $5,600,000 contract with Yankees.
SPRO Analysis - New
York Yankees pay market value for Gardner. SPRO $5,360,000.
Chase Headley signs
1 year $10,525,000 contract with Padres.
SPRO Analysis - San
Diego gets bargain in Headley. There seems to be a consensus
that
his season in 2012 was not what he truly is, and that 2013 was more in
line with his talent. 2014 will tell the tale in many ways.
Padres probably did good in discounting 2012, although other
players would have been credited for that season at a higher level.
SPRO $15,557,000.
Ernesti Frieri signs
1 year $3,800,000 contract with Angels.
SPRO Analysis - Los
Angeles of Anaheim overpays for Frieri. Lots of talent;
didn't
really step up when he had the chance last year, at least not to this
level. SPRO $2,586,000.
Al Alburquerque signs
1 year $837,500 contract with Tigers.
SPRO Analysis - Detroit
pays market value for Alburquerque. SPRO $850,000.

1 year $3,500,000 contract with Royals.
SPRO Analysis - Kansas
City overpays for Bonifacio. SPRO $2,782,000.

1 year $2,450,000 contract with Astros.
SPRO Analysis - Houston
pays market value for Castro. SPRO $2,587,000.

1 year $1,145,000 contract with A's.
SPRO Analysis - Oakland
pays market value for Gentry. SPRO $1,147,000.

SPRO Analysis - Chicago
White Sox get bargain in De Aza. SPRO $6,205,000.

1 year $900,000 contract with Rays.
SPRO Analysis - Tampa
Bay pays market value for Lobatan. SPRO $1,045,000.

1 year $4,175,000 contract with White Sox.
SPRO Analysis - Chicago
White Sox overpay for Beckham. SPRO $3,165,000.
Marco Estrada signs
1 year $3,325,000 contract, plus $100,000 incentives, with Brewers.
SPRO Analysis - Milwaukee
overpays for Estrada. SPRO $2,431,000.
Juan Francisco signs
1 year $1,350,000 contract with Brewers.
SPRO Analysis - Milwaukee
overpays for Francisco. SPRO $809,000.
Mike Dunn signs
1 year $1,400,000 contract with Marlins.
SPRO Analysis - Miami
pays market value for Dunn. SPRO $1,150,000.

for Duensing. SPRO $1,318,000.
Neftali Feliz signs
1 year $3,000,000 contract, plus $25,000 incentives, with Rangers.
SPRO Analysis - Texas
overpays for Feliz. Downhill for three years due to injury
and
performance. Have to prove one good year before getting to
this
level for us. SPRO $1,566,000.
Eric Hosmer signs
1 year $3,600,000 contract with Royals.
SPRO Analysis - Kansas
City pays market value for Hosmer. Up and coming and
improving year to year. SPRO $3,770,000.

SPRO Analysis - Arizona
overpays for Thatcher. SPRO $1,114,000.
Fernando Salas signs
1 year $870,000 contract with Angels.
SPRO Analysis - Los
Angeles of Anaheim gets bargain in Salas. Bit of a reach back
to
say this, but at one time, he'd have been worth a whole lot more at
this point, and it wasn't too long ago. Plus, he's still
young.
SPRO $1,383,000.
Ivan Nova signs
1 year $3,300,000 contract with Yankees.
SPRO Analysis - New
York Yankees overpay for Nova. Hey, it's just what they do,

$29,993,000,
and he's worth giving more than two years.

1 year $2,300,000 contract with Pirates.
SPRO Analysis - Pittsburgh
pays market value for Sanchez. SPRO $2,860,000.
Esmil Rogers signs

SPRO Analysis - Toronto
overpays for Rogers. SPRO $1,047,000.
Drew Storen signs
1 year $3,450,000 contract with Nationals, including incentives of $1m.
SPRO Analysis - Washington
overpays for Storen. Downhill for last several years, but
they're
paying for the potential he showed back then. SPRO $2,790,000.

1 year $2,025,000 contract with Rockies.

SPRO Analysis - Oakland
gets bargain in Jaso. SPRO $3,437,000.
Kyle Kendrick signs
1 year $7,675,000 contract with Phillies.
SPRO Analysis - Philadelphia
overpays for Kendrick. Kendrick is the definition of an okay,
but
average pitcher who shows signs of very good, then bad, to bring him to
average. He does give innings and that's where his value is,
but
it's just not this high based on the last several years. Hey,
but
it's the Phils style to overpay. SPRO $5,381,000.
Everth Cabrera signs
1 year $2,450,000 contract with Padres.
SPRO Analysis - San
Diego pays market value for Cabrera. SPRO
$2,426,000.
Tyson Ross signs
1 year $1,980,000 contract with Padres.
SPRO Analysis - San
Diego overpays for Ross. SPRO $919,000.
Ian Kennedy signs
1 year $6,100,000 contract with Padres.
SPRO Analysis - San
Diego gets bargain in Kennedy. Reaching back a couple years
for
the great season, but Kennedy has the ability, particularly in that
park to rebound to something very good. SPRO
$9,425,000.
Ross Detwiler signs
1 year $3,000,000 contract with Nationals, plus $50,000 incentives.

SPRO Analysis - New
York Yankees pay market value for Cervelli. SPRO
$622,000.
Chris Heisey signs
1 year $1,760,000 contract with Reds.
SPRO Analysis - Cincinnati
overpays for Heisey. Again, a slight quibble and likely
within
the margin of increase in MLB salaries this year. SPRO
$1,327,000.
Wilton Lopez signs
1 year $2,200,000 contract with Rockies.
SPRO Analysis - Colorado
gets bargain in Lopez. Bargain based on a very good year two
years ago, which they're discounting after last season in the rare air.
SPRO $3,421,000.
Ike Davis signs
1 year $3,500,000 contract with Mets.
SPRO Analysis - New
York Mets pay market value for Davis. If he's actually on the
market, this deal won't scare too many suitors away.
SPRO
$3,192,000.
Bud Norris signs
1 year $5,300,000 contract with Orioles.
SPRO Analysis - Baltimore overpays
for Norris. SPRO $3,529,000.
David Price signs
1 year $14,000,000 contract with Rays.
SPRO Analysis - Tampa
Bay pays market value for Price. SPRO $14,030,000.
Josh Collmenter signs
2 year $2,425,000 contract with Diamondbacks with 2 options years.
SPRO Analysis - Arizona
gets bargain in Collmenter. SPRO says $1,761,000 for one
year,
but Arizona has basically locked him up, with options for 4 years at
$6,500,000 if they want.
Josh Outman signs
1 year $1,250,000 contract with Indians.
SPRO Analysis - Cleveland
overpays for Outman. SPRO $850,000.

SPRO Analysis - Boston
pays market value for Badenhop. SPRO $1,945,000.

SPRO Analysis - New
York Mets pay market value for Tejada. SPRO $923,000.
Neal Cotts signs
1 year $2,200,000 contract with Rangers.
SPRO Analysis - Texas
gets bargain in Cotts. Really only a bargain because he
should be
paid for his very good year last year after three years of not
pitching. SPRO $3,784,000.
Franklin Morales signs
1 year $1,725,000 contract with Rangers.
SPRO Analysis - Texas
overpays for Morales. SPRO $956,000.
Clayton Kershaw signs
7 year $215,000,000 contract with Dodgers.
SPRO Analysis - Los
Angeles Dodgers overpay for Kershaw. Right off, let's
acknowledge, which everyone agrees, that Kershaw is a special pitcher
and deserves lots of dough. The argument is always, how much,
and
$30m per in a contract has never proved worthwhile to any club who has
payed a player near that much. So, SPRO is still high, but
lower
than that, 8 years $202,450,000, which is $25,306,250 per
year,
for one year of arbitration eligible and seven years of free agency.
Michael Saunders signs
1 year $2,300,000 contract with Mariners.
SPRO Analysis - Seattle
gets bargain in Saunders. Numbers a bit down last year, but
Saunders was still productive in a pitcher's park. SPRO
$3,564,000.
Seth Smith signs
1 year $4,500,000 contract with Padres.
SPRO Analysis - San
Diego pays market value for Smith. SPRO $4,040,000.
Dayan Viciedo signs
1 year $2,800,000 contract with White Sox.
SPRO Analysis - Chicago
White Sox overpay for Viciedo. Likely to rebound after a year
that was worse than the year before, Chicago paid him as if he'd been
equal to that former year. SPRO $1,980,000.

Free Agent Players
Arbitration Contracts
Stephen Strasburg signs
1 year $3,975,000 contract with Senators.
SPRO Analysis - Washington
gets bargain for Strasburg. Senators avoid arbitration with
contract slightly below the SPRO $4,582,000. We're
surprised
Strasburg doesn't want to go longer term at this point.
Brett Hayes signs
1 year $630,000 contract with Royals, including $20,000 in incentives.
SPRO Analysis - Kansas
City pays market value for Hayes. Slight overpay for a guy
with
18 plate appearances last year and might really be a AAAA player.
SPRO $514,000.
Jesse Chavez signs
1 year $775,000 contract with A's.
SPRO Analysis - Oakland
pays market value for Chavez. A's avoid arbitration with fair
contract. SPRO $776,000.
Pre-Arbitration Contracts
Jose Iglesias signs
1 year $1,650,000 contract with Tigers.
SPRO Analysis - Detroit
overpays for Iglesias. He's a nice young shortstop with a
good
glove and last year a good batting average. But, this is
nuts.
We know he's coming off a hefty bonus baby Scott Boras
contract
paying him over $2m per year prior to performance. We know
he's
very good at some things, ... fielding. But, it's too early
to
annoit and pay him as if he's Ozzie Smith. SPRO $535,000.
This is a guy who only walked 15 times in 382 plate
appearances,
scored only 39 runs while playing in two great offenses, and knocked in
29. Interpolate that to 600 PA, that's 24 walks, 61 runs
scored,
and 46 RBI. Paying a guy like this at 1.036 Major League
Service
Time is like saying he's a $20m per year player when a free agent.
This is nuts.
