  • Week of December 26

Drew Storen signs 1 year $3,000,000 contract with Reds, plus $1.5 incentives.

SPRO Analysis - Cincinnati gets bargain in Storen. Bargain only in the sense that they did not have to pay full value unless he hits the incentives, but still a bargain. SPRO 1 year $4,376,000.

    Free Agents

    Week of December 19

Edwin Encarnacion signs 3 year $60,000,000 contract with Indians, plus $20m team option for 4th year.

SPRO Analysis - Cleveland pays market value for Encarnacion. Even a slight bargain and thought he could get a longer term. SPRO 3 years $67,929,000.

Ben Revere signs 1 year $4,000,000 contract, plus $2.25m incentives, with Angels.

SPRO Analysis - Los Angeles of Anaheim gets bargain in Revere. Yes, he has deficiencies, but one bad year on his OBP and at a young age means the Angels did well here with an incentives laden deal. SPRO 1 years $6,531,000.

Alex Avila signs 1 year $2,000,000 contract with Tigers.

SPRO Analysis - Detroit gets bargain in Avila. Slight, reaching back to better days after two down seasons. SPRO 1 year $2,866,000.

Jhoulys Chacin signs 1 year $1,750,000 contract with Padres.

SPRO Analysis - San Diego gets bargain Chacin. Three years ago he won 14 games and others seem to be getting bigger contracts, see below, for longer ago success. SPRO 1 years $5,216,000.

Daniel Hudson signs 2 year $11,000,000 contract with Pirates.

SPRO Analysis - Pittsburgh overpays for Hudson. It was five years ago when Hudson was a pitcher you wanted, but the Pirates gave him the deal Chacin should have gotten. Hmmm. Guess we'll see which one made more sense. SPRO 1 year $1,731,000.

    Resigned with Team

    Week of December 19

Ender Inciarte to AVOID ARBITRATION, accept extension, for 5 years $30,525,000 with Braves.

SPRO Analysis - Atlanta overpays for Inciarte. Numbers not bad in the years given, but the term is too long for us with a player who has 12 HR, 81 RBI in 1,254 at bats. SPRO 3 years $15,380,000.

Jose Abreu to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $10,825,000 contract with White Sox.

SPRO Analysis - Chicago White Sox pay market value for Abreu. A slight overpay, but hard to calculate in this odd situation where Abreu declines last three years of a free agent contract to go to his 1st year of arbitration. Not sure why he did that. SPRO 1 year $8,939,000.

    Week of December 12

Brad Ziegler signs 2 year $16,000,000 contract with Marlins.

SPRO Analysis - Miami pays market value for Ziegler. Actually a bit of a bargan. SPRO 2 years $18,193,000.

Koji Uehara to sign 1 year $6,000,000 contract with Cubs.

SPRO Analysis - Chicago Cubs overpay for Uehara. Three straight years of diminished returns question quite that much. SPRO 1 years $4,943,000.

    Resigned with Team

    Week of December 12

Odubel Herrera signs 5 year $30,500,000 contract, with team option for 2 additional years at $11.25m, $12.5m, and $2.5m/$1m buyouts with Phillies.

SPRO Analysis - Philadelphia pays market value for Herrera. Right on the money as far as $ per term, but we're a bit concerned about length. SPRO 3 years $11,100,000.

Andres Blanco signs 1 year $3,000,000 contract with Phillies.

SPRO Analysis - Philadelphia overpays for Blanco. No big deal, but a bit much. SPRO 1 year $2,213,000.

Brandon Workman to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $635,000 contract with Red Sox.

SPRO Analysis - Boston pays market value for Workman. SPRO $548,000.

Logan Ondrusek signs 1 year $650,000 contract with $500,000 incentives and $1.5m option with Orioles.

SPRO Analysis - Baltimore pays market value for Ondrusek. SPRO 1 year $879,000.

Kenley Jansen signs 5 year $80,000,000 contract with Dodgers.

SPRO Analysis - LA Dodgers get bargain in Jansen. Tough to say that, because last year's stellar season is better than his past, but it sure was great, one of the best relief pitching seasons in history. SPRO 5 year $99,159,000.

Justin Turner to sign 4 year $64,000,000 contract with Dodgers.

SPRO Analysis - LA Dodgers pay market value for Turner. SPRO 4 year $62,710,000.

    Week of December 5

Dexter Fowler to sign 5 year $82,500,000 contract with Cardinals.

SPRO Analysis - St. Louis overpays for Fowler. We like Fowler; think he's a valuable member of any team, as proven last year in Chicago. However, for some reason, he's only had 600 plate appearances, and that's as a leadoff hitter, in his career, which diminishes his value to us. SPRO 4 years $52,794,000.

Aroldis Chapman to sign 5 year $86,000,000 contract with Yankees.

SPRO Analysis - NY Yankees pay market value for Chapman. Hard to believe we're agreeing with this since, in general, we don't prefer huge contracts for relievers. SPRO 5 years $87,253,000.

Jeff Locke to sign 1 year $3,000,000 contract with Marlins.

SPRO Analysis - Miami pays market value for Locke. SPRO $3,212,000.

Wilson Ramos to sign 2 year $12,500,000 contract, including $6m incentives, pending physical, with Rays.

SPRO Analysis - Tampa Bay pays market value for Ramos. Hard to judge this due to the injury, as this may be a year and one-half year contract. If he had not had the injury, SPRO 2 years $23,732,000.

Mitch Moreland to sign 1 year $5,500,000 contract with Red Sox.

SPRO Analysis - Boston pays market value for Moreland. SPRO $5,106,000.

A.J. Ellis to sign 1 year $2,500,000 contract with Marlins.

SPRO Analysis - Miami overpays for Ellis. Four straight decline years. A bit too much for that, but he does provide great clubhouse presence and almost an extra coach. SPRO $1,907,000.

Fernando Rodney to sign 1 year $2,750,000 contract, including $2.25m incentives, with Diamondbacks.

SPRO Analysis - Arizona gets bargain in Rodney. To get Rodney on this incentive plus number is about what he's worth overall. SPRO $4,970,000.

Ian Desmond to sign 5 year $70,000,000 contract, with team option for 6th year at $15m, with Rockies.

SPRO Analysis - Colorado pays market value for Desmond. We think the term is one year long, but the per year value is okay. SPRO 4 years $52,120,000.

Joaquin Benoit to sign 1 year $7,500,000 contract with Phillies.

SPRO Analysis - Philadelphia overpays for Benoit. Lousy first half 5.18 ERA, great second half 0.38 ERA, but the pay is for the second half. Three straight years of overall regression. SPRO $3,161,000.

Mark Melancon to sign 4 year $62,000,000 contract with Giants.

SPRO Analysis - San Francisco gets bargain in Melancon. Can't believe we're saying that and his performance may be signaling a different trend in contract progression. SPRO 4 years $95,394,000.

Steven Pearce to sign 2 year $12,500,000 contract with Blue Jays.

SPRO Analysis - Toronto pays market value for Pearce. SPRO 2 years $10,700,000.

Matt Holliday to sign 1 year $13,000,000 contract with Yankees.

SPRO Analysis - NY Yankees overpay for Holliday. Four straight years of a decrease in his 3 Year Rolling Average. SPRO 1 year $5,745,000.

    Resigned with Team

    Week of December 5

Carlos Gomez signs 1 year $11,500,000 contract with Rangers.

SPRO Analysis - Texas overpays for Gomez. Two straight years well below his performance before that questions whether he'll rebound to that level. SPRO 1 year $8,344,000.

Jesus Sucre to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $630,000 contract with Mariners.

SPRO Analysis - Seattle pays market value for Sucre. SPRO 1 year $545,000.

Rich Hill to sign 3 year $48,000,000 contract with Dodgers.

    Week of November 28

Carlos Beltran to sign 1 year $16,000,000 contract with Astros.

SPRO Analysis - Houston overpays for Beltran. I don't know what Houston is doing this year, but seems like a bunch of dumb money being spent. SPRO 1 year $10,154,000.

Marc Rzepczinski to sign 2 year $11,000,000 contract with Mariners.

SPRO Analysis - Seattle overpays for Marc. I know he had a good 11 plus innings for Washington at the end of the year, but that doesn't tell the whole of his recent story. No. There's a reason he moves around. SPRO 1 year $2,203,000.

Matt Joyce to sign 2 year $11,000,000 contract with A's.

SPRO Analysis - Oakland pays market value for Joyce. SPRO 2 years $11,661,000.

Jon Jay to sign 1 year $8,000,000 contract with Cubs.

SPRO Analysis - Chicago Cubs overpay for Jay. Yes, he rebounded some last year, if you think two home runs and twenty-six RBI over 374 plate appearances is what you're looking for. Three straight years of his three year Rolling Average dropping does not warrant this payday. We'd be okay with two years at that price. SPRO 1 year $3,977,000.

Edison Volquez to sign 2 year $22,000,000 contract with Marlins, pending physical.

SPRO Analysis - Miami pays market value for Volquez. Not sure why some think his turn down of $17.2m for one year was good, but this contract is fair. SPRO 2 years $24,691,000.

    Resigned with Team

Ehiri Adrianza to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $600,000/$300,000 split contract with Giants.

Rene Rivera to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $1,750,000 contract with Mets.

SPRO Analysis - NY Mets get bargain in Rivera. With all these high $ spent, to get a solid backup catcher in last year of arb for this is good. SPRO 1 year $2,231,000.

Scott Van Slyke to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $1,325,000 contract with Dodgers.

SPRO Analysis - LA Dodgers pay market value for Van Slyke. SPRO 1 year $1,254,000.

Chris Hatcher to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $,1250,000 contract with Dodgers.

SPRO Analysis - LA Dodgers overpay for Hatcher. It's slight and mostly caused by his $1,065,000 salary for 2016 and the desire to give him a raise and not a cut. But boy, nice to get a raise for a 5.53 ERA. SPRO 1 year $959,000.

Jose Lobaton to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $1,575,000 contract, plus $25,000 incentives with Nationals.

Yoenis Cespedes to sign 4 year $110,000,000 contract with Mets.

SPRO Analysis - New York Mets overpay for Cespedes. At $27.5m per year, the Mets are saying Cesepedes is one of the ten best players in the game. But while he's very good, he's not that. SPRO 5 years $91,233,000.

Jordan Lyles to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $3,175,000 contract with Rockies.

SPRO Analysis - Colorado overpays for Lyles. For us, a non-tender player at that price. Two high ERA years in a row. SPRO 1 year $1,392,000.

Tuffy Gosewisch to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $635,000 contract with Braves.

SPRO Analysis - Atlanta pays market value for Gosewisch. SPRO 1 years $549,000.

Nori Aoki to AVOID ARBITRATION and sign 1 year $5,500,000 contract with Astros.

SPRO Analysis - Houston pays market value for Aoki. Little high, but in the mix for this arbitraiton eligible player who at one time was really a free agent coming into the league. SPRO 1 years $4,889,000 (ARB), 6,111,000 (FA).
